Modal fe’llar asosiy fe’lga so‘zlovchining munosabatini qo‘shadi: qobiliyat (can), ruxsat (may), majburiyat (must), maslahat (should), ehtimollik (might). Bir xil gap modal fe’lga qarab butunlay boshqa ma’no oladi: He must be at home (aniq uyda), He might be at home (balki uyda), He can’t be at home (uyda bo‘lishi mumkin emas). Imtihonda modal fe’llar ma’no bo‘yicha tanlash, mustn’t va don’t have to farqi hamda o‘tmish haqidagi xulosalar (must have done) shaklida keladi.
§1. Modal fe’llarning umumiy qoidalari
Modal fe’llar boshqa fe’llardan grammatik jihatdan farq qiladi:
Shaxsga qarab o‘zgarmaydi, -s olmaydi: She can swim. (✗ She cans)
Keyin to siz birinchi shakl keladi: You must go. (✗ must to go)
So‘roq do siz, o‘rin almashtirish bilan: Can you help me? (✗ Do you can)
Inkor not bilan: cannot/can’t, mustn’t, shouldn’t, might not.
O‘zining infinitivi va -ing shakli yo‘q, shuning uchun boshqa zamonlarda "o‘rinbosar" ishlatiladi: can → be able to, must → have to.
modal + V (to siz) · So‘roq: Modal + ega + V? · Inkor: modal + not + V
Asosiy modallar: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would. Yarim modallar (oddiy fe’l kabi o‘zgaradi): have to, need to, be able to, ought to.
§2. Qobiliyat va ruxsat
Qobiliyat:
can — hozirgi qobiliyat: I can speak three languages.
could — o‘tmishdagi umumiy qobiliyat: I could read when I was four.
was/were able to — o‘tmishdagi muayyan holatda uddalash: The fire was big, but everyone was able to escape. (bu ma’noda ✗ could escape). Inkorda esa couldn’t ham to‘g‘ri: I couldn’t open the door.
be able to boshqa zamonlarda: I will be able to come.I’ve never been able to swim.
Ruxsat:
can — oddiy: Can I use your phone?
could — xushmuomala: Could I ask a question?
may — rasmiy: May I come in?
Javobda could ishlatilmaydi: Yes, you can. / Yes, you may.
could — umumiy qobiliyat (o‘tmish) · was able to — bir martalik muvaffaqiyat
Misol

have to — tashqi majburiyat (qoida, sharoit, boshqa odam): I have to wear a uniform at work.
must ning o‘tmishi yo‘q, o‘tmishda faqat had to: Yesterday I had to work late. Kelajakda — will have to.
mustn’t — taqiq: You mustn’t smoke here.
don’t have to / needn’t — zarurat yo‘q (qilsang ham bo‘ladi, qilmasang ham): You don’t have to come — it’s optional.
mustn’t = mumkin emas · don’t have to = shart emas
Bu ikki shakl inkorda butunlay boshqa ma’noga ega, imtihonda tez-tez so‘raladi.
Misol
Tomorrow is Sunday, so I ___ get up early.

Shall I…? — yordam taklifi: Shall I open the window?; Shall we…? — birga qilishni taklif: Shall we go?
Could you…? / Would you…? — xushmuomala iltimos: Could you help me?
O‘tmishdagi afsus yoki tanqid: should have + V3 — qilish kerak edi, lekin qilinmadi: You should have told me.I shouldn’t have eaten so much.
§5. Ehtimollik va mantiqiy xulosa (deduction)

must — deyarli aniq (ijobiy xulosa) · may/might/could — ehtimol · can’t — mumkin emas (inkor xulosa)

O‘tmish haqida (modal + have + V3):
The street is wet — it must have rained.
He may have missed the train.
She can’t have seen me — she didn’t say hello.
Inkor xulosada mustn’t emas, can’t ishlatiladi: ✗ He mustn’t be at home → ✓ He can’t be at home.
Misol
